FACSIMILES OF ENTIRE MANUSCRIPTS.

The application of photographic processes to the reproduction of entire manuscripts has received great impetus during the last few years, and it is certain to be very widely extended in the near future. "Without taking account of the copies of individual manuscripts of the later middle ages which are now constantly appearing, those of the most famous early Greek and Latin codices, which have already been produced, may be named :—

Codex Alexandrinus

The two great Biblical MSS. in Greek, the Codex Alexandrinus, in the British Museum, and the Codex Vaticanus, at Rome, have been published in facsimile, With these are to be grouped the reproductions of the Codex Marchalianus, of the Prophets, in Greek, at Rome ; of the Vienna Genesis, in Greek ; and of the Codex Bezae of the Gospels and the Acts, in Greek and Latin, at Cambridge, The Utrecht Psalter, in Latin, was one of the first MSS. to be reproduced, by the editors of the Palæographical Society.

Under the auspices of the Librarians of the University Library of Leiden, a series of facsimiles is being issued in sumptuous style. The following have already been published :—The Codex Sarravianus-Colbertinus of the Pentateuch, in Greek, at Leiden, Paris, and St. Petersburg ; the Codex Bernensis 363, containing works of Augustine, Bede, Horace, Ovid, etc. ; the Codex Clarkianus of Plato, at Oxford ; the Codex Palatinus of Plautus, at Heidelberg ; the Codex Venetus A. of the Iliad, at Venice ; the Ravenna Aristophanes ; the Ambrosian Terence, at Milan ; the two Laurentian MSS. of Tacitus, at Florence ; and the Dioscorides, at Vienna.

Codex Vaticanus

The Hellenic Society has published the Laurentian Sophocles, at Florence, and, more recently, the Aristophanes at Venice.

The Italian Government has issued the Laurentian Eschylus, at Florence ; and it is publishing the great Florentine codex of Justinian's Pandects.

By order of the Pope a series of facsimiles of Vatican MSS. is being produced. The Codex Vaticanus and the Codex Romanus, of Virgil, and the illustrated roll of the Book of Joshua have been issued.

Monsignor Ceriani and A, Ratti have edited the fragmentary Ambrosian Homer, at Milan ; Monsieur Omont has published the Codex Σ of Demosthenes, at Paris ; the Bodleian MS. of Jerome's version of the Chronicle of Eusebius has been issued at Oxford ; and the fragmentary Codex Floriacensis of the same work appears in the supplementary Leiden series.

Greek literary works on papyrus which have been published in full in facsimile, such as " Aristotle on the Constitution of Athens," etc., are referred to in the list above, under the heading of Papyri (Treatises and Facsimiles.)

Codex Sinaiticus
